Bio/History
Byron Eddy - Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin and Tin Whistles
The pride of Sunnyside, Byron Eddy remains attached to his East Coast roots having grown up on the shores of Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. After making the move to Calgary in 2000, like so many other transplanted East Coasters, the music takes him home. The last founding member of the ever evolving band, Fraid Knot, his ties to the Avalon Peninsula inspire a constant tide of passionate creativity and on-stage enthusiasm. Byron's musical introduction started with the decision to pick up his 1st guitar and a chord book while in his teens. Since then, he has honed his instrumental, vocal, song writing skills, and on stage persona. His efforts culminated in nominations from the Music Industry Association in Newfoundland for Song of the Year, Album of The Year, New Group of The Year, and Roots Traditional Band of The Year with his former band, Muldow. Now, performing and recording with Fraid Knot for Western Canada's biggest and best party crowds is Byron's favorite pastime and it shows!
Glenn Morangie - Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar, Mandolin
Glenn was born in Lahr, Germany in the summer of 1969 and soon began his musical development on the piano at the age of 4. Influenced by a family of musicians, he quickly decided to have a go at the guitar and has never looked back. Glenn began teaching several musical instruments and playing professionally in his early teens. Throughout his career, he has enjoyed a great deal of success performing solo, as well as, being a big part of many different types of bands. Glenn's strong lead work has brought a true rock presence to Fraid Knot. This combined with the bands east coast roots provides a truly unique sound, with an electric edge.
Danny O'Malley - Accordion, Accordion, Back-up Vocals, Accordion. Oh, and did we mention he plays the accordion?
From Lederhosen to Leprechauns, we acquired Danny from a high energy Rocktoberfest band after a late night drinking session in the Wild Bill's band house in Banff. Born in Italy, Danny grew up in Canada musically influenced by the Western European roots of his father and Celtic background of his mother. Danny is now officially the youngest member of Fraid Knot and keeps the band firmly based in its traditional roots. Forever mastering the art of playing the squeeze box, Danny demonstrates a versatility and passion for the instrument that comes across in his energetic and "sprawling" performances with Fraid Knot as he succeeds in overcoming the many misconceptions surrounding this rockin' instrument. He can be found chowing down at various 24 hours restaurants throughout the city after gigs at 4 am.
Ed Williamson - Bass Guitar, Backing vocals
Ed grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, and while living there played in both original and contemporary folk bands. His Scottish heritage and musical background fit well with Fraid Knot's Celtic influences. Since relocating to Canada and living in Calgary, Ed has played in many different types of bands, from Folk, Western Swing and Country, to Middle of the Road and Rock. Playing with Fraid Knot, Ed seems to have come full circle in his musical career.
Patrick (Lael) Connor - Percussion
Lael was born in 1966 in Calgary. Since beginning his professional performing career with Celtic singer Margaret Cristl, Lael has run the gauntlet of musical styles. A frenzied path of rock, jazz, blues, country and orchestral has lead him back to the loving arms of Fraid Knotified Celt. Lael's kinetically aggressive and passionate approach to playing displays the ironic irrelevance of him possessing a Master of Music Degree in Percussion Performance.
Kevin Gilbert - Sound Engineer
Sound engineer extraordinaire, audio guru, repair man/magician, volume technician, equipment transporter, band security provider, snake cord straddler, bar tab obliterator, smoker, band van driver, Fraid Knot's #1 fan and the best guy in the world.....Kevin from Fraid Knot..
